Best Beaches in the World: Cala Luna - Italy

Some say the finest in Sardinia, others in all of Italy, but whatever the verdict - Cala Luna deserves to be mentioned as one of the best beaches in the world.

Beach Location

Cala Luna is regarded by many people as the number one beach on the Mediterranean.

Cala Luni, which means half moon in Italian, is located seven kilometres south of Cala Gonone on the North West coast of the island near Dorgali.

Living up to its name, the beach is a beautiful 700 metre long white half moon crescent, which overlooks the Gulf of Orosei.

The beach is known for its pearly white sand and crystalline waters -the shallowness of which means that it is a great place for children to swim safely.

The vibrant marine life and the balmy temperatures of the sea make it ideal for scuba divers and snorkelers.

There are six small caves on one side of the beach and nearby is the Grotta del Bue Marino, the last Sardinian hiding place of the endangered monk seal and the largest, most spectacular of the many beautiful grottos.

The beach offers a backdrop of high calcareous rocks, with deep, lush green valleys and forests of Holm oak, juniper and macchia.
