Flying start for European ski season

12/4/2009 1:16:00 PM

Alpine ski resorts are preparing to open their doors to eager winter sports enthusiasts this weekend and the ski season is off to a promising start as heavy, fresh snow has fallen across much of Europe - so get your skates on and make the most of the white stuff...

This is perhaps the one time in life when getting dumped on is a good thing. All those of you who are planning to rush to the slopes this weekend will be in for a treat - the snowfall across much of Europe means conditions on the mountains will be ideal for skiing and boarding.

That will be a big relief to British ski operators, who reported that bookings for holidays were at their lowest for 10 years. Many ski holiday companies have been forced to close due to slow booking rates, so there is hope this strong snowfall should boost interest in the slopes.

More snow is forecast for the week ahead, but this could turn to rain, so best to book at resorts that are at high altitudes for the very best of the white stuff.

Switzerland's St Moritz and the Engadin Valley have received 1.3m of snow since the weekend. Most other Swiss resorts have done well too - Sedrun got a whole metre of new snow in 24 hours earlier this week.

Engelberg was virtually closed down by snow at the start of the week due to a snowstorm that hit central Switzerland with over three feet of fresh snow.

Val d'Isère and Tignes in France has received 25cm of snow, whilst Courchevel opens this weekend with more than 30cm and Chamonix also has a good snow fall.

In Italy, the ski resorts enjoy a long ski weekend to December 8th so it's great timing for these heavy falls. Many resorts officially open this weekend including Monterosa Ski, Dolomitri Superski, Limone and Courmayeur. Cervinia has had 60cm. Courmayeur, the rest of the Aosta Valley and parts of the Dolomites have all had substantial falls.
