The land is in good order and produces extra virgin olive oil and good wine, the panoramic views to the Gran Sasso mountain range are stunning, the location excellent.
The Medieval terracota hill town of Penne is one of the most pleasantly located towns in Abruzzo, only 40 minutes from the airport, 50 minutes from the beach, 40 minutes from the mountains.
Tranquill yet so close to facilites, Penne has a local CAI (equivalent of the Ramblers).
From spring 2007 regular guided walks will be available from Penne.
There are all level of schools and technical colleges, fantastic public transport links to Pescara and surrounding villages. Direct bus to Rome.
The local restaurants are fantastic, and there is entertainment for all ages, regular concerts and gigs from classical to 'Kiss'. There are numerous trattorias in the vicinity where you can get two courses at lunch for only €6 a head! There are over 10 food outlets opening at different times of day in the Old Town itself.
Once you become a resident here there are free Italian lessons available in Penne. In the meantime there are a couple of bartenders in the town who can speak and advise you in English if you so wish.
Other beautiful towns can easily be visited from here such as Loreto Aprutino, Citta San'Angelo, Atri, and Chieti.
Most cultural events offer free entry being sponsored by local enterprise and the council, and you're never far away from a beautiful boutique, regional produce delicatessen, or a night of festival celebration.
Saturday holds the general and grand fruit market. Also there are numerous DIY shops, grocers, butchers and bakers in the town.
There is an aerobics studio, and beauticians in the main square, the large gym near the lake has a magnificent climbing wall.
After touring and searching the whole of Italy I firmly believe that Abruzzo and Penne represent fantastic value for money.
