Description of buildings
A little bit of history.......
The origin of the Trullo are embedded in the arcaic Indo-European architectural styles, such as the Sardinian Nuraghi, with the tipycal “Tholos” construction, which is Greek for dome and was used as a symbol of the universe.
In addition to the powerful magic and cosmic symbolism of the trullo, as suggested by the pagan and Christian signs painted on the exterior of the conical roofs, the origins of the trullo are also attributed to a more practical reason, dictated by the necessity of the peasants to free their land from the numerous stones scattered over their fields and very common in the carsic Apulian territory.
These dry stone constructions where therefore the outcome of the exploitation of “poor”on site materials. The walls are sometimes up to 3 meters thick to keep the interior cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
With the passing of time and the consequent loss cf knowledge of the ancestral origins, the basic design of the trullo changed from a circular to a square base, making better use of the available space.
This builder’s techniques became more and more refined over the ages, until they devised a new shape of domed ceilings resting on four arches.
